DEPARTMENT CONDUCTS WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT IN 2019 THROUGH A LADY DRIVER COMPETITION, AND A NEW RECORD OF EXCELLENCE IS RECORDED

The Lady Driver Skills Enhancement Competition continues to grow from strength to strength with records being broken. The competition was fierce than ever before. Indeed, the 2019 competition has been the most exciting season with over 200 women that came forth to battled for the top spot.

Women, aged between 18 and 55 from different walks-of-life such as Government, State Own Entities, Private companies and Public Transport sector participated.

The department believes that women deserve a chance to enhance their driving skills and to showcase how they have evolved over the years from being mere pedestrians or passengers to become matured and seasoned motorists.

The competition was assessed on various skills; a track test was done to assess the drivers abilities to manoeuvre in confined spaces or roads while the road test assessed the driver’s defensive driving manoeuvres. Added to this was a theory test done in order to assess if drivers are familiar with regulations and rules of the road. Knowledge of road signs and a tyre change test was also part of the challenges that lady driver had to be tested on.

One of the participants who scooped position number one (1) in the district said; “we are grateful for the opportunity given to us by the department of Community Safety and Transport Management. We have shared and learned a lot of driving skills. And in the process we were educated about road safety in general as well as how to change a tyre. Some of these skills we didn’t possess. Indeed, this initiative has made us better drivers”

Through this competition, the department seeks to pursue women and encourage them to play a major role in influencing the attitude and behaviour of motorists, passengers and communities using our roads.

The competition took place in all the four Districts of the North West Province were the ‘do's and don’ts’ of driving were honed and an ambitious intention to reduce road crashed was put on the pedestal. After such women training techniques are sharpened, more and more women gets behind the wheel more alert, more focused, better skilled and well prepared to demonstrate good road safety behaviour.

Note that the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management conducts this type of women empowerment program deliberately, as a way of continuing the August, Women's Month, celebrations in 2019 and yearly.

The 2019 competition was a great platform to perfect driving skills and techniques amongst women drivers. The winner is road safety, after all....
